Extracts from Inspector of Schools' letter dated 6th February 1900.
With reference to the application for a
grant towards defraying the cost of the additions to St..
Joseph's College on which I reported in my letter No of the
4th. October last, I have the honour to state that the cost
of the alterations and additions amounts as will be seen from
the enclosed letter addressed to Bishop Piaz-zoli by the ar
chitect Mr Danby, to$11,049.62.
In considering however what grant should
be made to the College I think that the Government need
take no account of the sum $ 1,340 spent on drainage. If
the Government once begins to give grants towards defray-
ing the cost of alterations to the drainage system of
Grant-in-Aid Schools an awkward precedent will be formed."
Once a building grant has been made, managers ought to
keep the buildings in proper repair at their own cost. Besides, whilst it is impossible in a school like St.Joseph's
College which is a boarding school and Orphanage as well as a day school, to separate distinctly expenditure on the
boarders from expenditure on the day scholars, it is rea-
sonable to suppose that much the greater part of the expense
incurred for drainage is due to the presence of a large
number of boarders on the premises.
Deducting therefore the amount spent
on drainage there remains including architect's commission,
a sum of $ 9,159.62.
To decide what part of this has been
spent on the day-school, with which alone the Government is concerned, it is necessary to go somewhat into detail.
